Contents Analysis Of A Contents Page - LIIAR

Language:

The language on the contents page is shown in many different ways, this is done to make finding a specific article or page of interest easy.
Firstly the page has a title that states 'whats inside', this is usually at the front of a magazine and shows us a list of page numbers  incase we need to find anything inside such as a page of interst or an article that has had a teaser printed on the front cover.
Secondly the bottom image shows a group of people at student age who are smiling, this shows that they are happy and people reading the magazine may see this standing out and want to read more about this article to see why it is that they are so happy.
Moreover the fact that this image is captured in a school or college environment may reach out to people who arent enjoying being a student because it's showing that even though in college you can still have fun with friends.
Finally, the text on the contents page is bold and the sub-headings are all in block capitals, which in turn makes it easy for readers to find things with ease because everything is so large.

Institution

The Institution of this magazine is for people in the college institution and these are the people that have published this magazine, other institutions include the music institution, wildlife institution, health institution and so on.
Because there are lots on conventions related to college and there are images of students we instantly know that its institution for this particular magazine is the education institution.

Ideology

This magazine contents page will instantly draw the readers attention to the images on tthe right hand side of the page, they have been put there to make important or big articles stand out and suggest that the magazine will largely feature writing and issues related to these images.
Further more the images on the page make the reader, read on because they have seen the image on the contents page, but now want to read about to find out how that picture links in with the article written about it on what ever page.
from looking at this page we see that the magazines theme is on college, we know this because a lot of the subheadings for the articles are based on college issues for example, a subheading says 'fire thier enthusiasm' and another says 'codes of conduct' both of which are assosiated with the college environment.

Audience

The target audience for this magazine is primarily aimed at college students who will curently be taking A- Levels, we know this because of the sub-headings and subject matters that are being written about and discussed in this magazine, all of this further backs up the target audience.
Both of these are key things in suggesting who the magazine is aimed at, however there are other things such as the images that also give us more of an idea aswell this is because we now get a visual insight as to some of the kind of people involved in this magazine.
The contents page and the articles disscussed will change every month but even though this is so, there will always be issues and articles being written that suite the college student audience because otherwise it would'nt appeal to the student age group which is 16-18, but instead would appeal to a different age group.

Representation

The images used in the contents page have been put together to make the magazine appeal to its rightful target audience, for example on the magazine's contents page, images of students smiling have been put there diliberately, this is so that when students pick up the magazine and flick through they can see that the magazine relates to them directly.
Furthermore, because the image was captured in the college learning environment and the students are smiling and happy, it suggests to the other students and poeple reading the magazine that they are enjoying college life and makes them think to them selves that college and the work that comes with is isnt all that bad if people can learn, get a higher education and still have a social life and have fun at the same.

Evaluation of college magazine front cover

Evaluation of my college magazine front cover

When producing my college magazine front cover I decided to use the editing software ‘Photoshop’ which I had previously used for the production of my perfume bottle. This was so that once I had my final image to use for the front cover, I could edit words and shapes onto it so that it would eventually end up looking like a proper magazine front cover that would be suitable for college and A-level students.
The only difficulty I endured when trying to construct my magazine front cover was  that I had never created or looked at a magazine front cover in detail before, so I had to research and really look into what I was doing before actually constructing anything. Moreover after a few sessions researching and looking into what I had to do in order to create a shop quality magazine front cover, I was soon underway.
Once I had come to terms with what I had to do, from start to finish my front cover took me approximately two days to complete at a standard that I was happy with.

When taking my photo, I wanted to capture an image that would make my magazine cover stand and reach out to my target audience. I did this by capturing a fellow student who was smiling and looked like she was enjoying college life, even though this wasn’t essential as a magazine doesn’t always sell because of its front cover, it still meant that my magazine would be more likely to be purchased and sell well on the product market.
For the location of the photo, I wanted a medium-close up shot, that was taken somewhere within a college environment as my target audience for the magazine was in fact college students who are aged from 16-18. However even though my photo was in a college environment I made sure that the background for the photo was in fact bright so that it would contrast with the darker clothing of the model who features on my front cover as she was wearing black and grey at the time of my photo shoot.

The target audience for the magazine I created a cover for is mainly for students aged from 16-18 who are currently sitting A-levels, therefore I would sell my product in the college environment or in places such as clubs where students can attend, shops such as WHSmiths and libraries where students will be found researching or reading.
Also, the fact that I am trying to sell my magazine to students meant that I had to make my magazine front cover appeal to their age group, this is because younger generations of the 21st century won’t pick up a magazine unless it excites them or looks interesting and directly appeals to them.
I chose the name ‘CAMPUS’ because it directly links with the target audience of the magazine, students, for instance the term ‘campus’ is related to college because they are traditionally the land on which a college or university and related institutional buildings are situated. Usually a campus includes libraries and lecture halls in which all students will study and learn in.
Finally when choosing the location and shooting my photos I tried linking these ideas in to my image to create an effect and impact on the student target audience. For example, taking the image in a college environment where people learn meant that when a student who attends a college comes across the magazine it will directly relate to them both because of the images, and the sub-headlines used such as ‘Students blow up lab!’.
This is because if a student saw this it would instantly appeal to them as it’s not every day a science lab blows up especially not in a college where health and safety regulations are some of the key factors in creating a safe working environment.

If I had the chance to create my magazine front cover over again then I would most probably spend longer working on the final front cover, this is because I felt as though I rushed it this time round due to a shortage of time. For example, I could of played around with photo shop a little more and this may have given me better results when it came to the production of my front cover.

Contents Analysis Of A Front Cover - LIIAR

Laguage:

The language on the front cover of this magazine is shown in many different ways, this is done to attract a specific target audience to the magazine.
Firstly the front cover has a Masthead that says 'COLLEGE', this shows us that the magazine is specifically aimed at college students who are undergoing A-Levels and it stands out so that it will catch the readers eye.
Secondly the main image has a medium-close up frame and is of a young girl of student age, this is used to attract the college student age group, also the fact that she is smiling suggests that she is enjoying college life. If students that are not enjoying college life see this they may pick up a copy and read it to find out how she got to be so happy.
Moreover the setting of the photo is in a green field with lots of sunshine, this gives the essence of freedom and happiness where as if the background was against a brick wall it would suggest that the girl was trapped and thats not what the image is trying to suggest.
Also the colours on the students T-shirt are bright and stand out, they match in with the masthead aswell which creates the link between 'COLLEGE' and the student making it more attractive to the target audience.
Thirdly the text on the magazine is bold and the headlines are all in block capitals, this is shown when is says 'SHE'S 15 AND PREGNANT'. This catches the eye of a potential readers and links with the Masthead because  if this girl is 15 she would be going to college in a year or so and this is what makes students want to read on to find out more about the story.

Institution

The Institution of this magazine would be people in the college institution and these are the people that have published this magazine, other institutions include the music institution, wildlife institution, health institution and so on.
Because its called 'COLLEGE' we instantly know that its institution for this particular magazine is the education institution.
Moreover this college magazine features on one college in particular called 'SMU', we know this because the girl in the magazine is wearing a T-shirt saying 'I LOVE SMU', this also makes the college look good and the fact that the model is smiling stands out to potential readers within the magazines target audience and makes them want to read and look inside.

Ideolgy:

The genre of  this magazine would fit in with my target audience because no matter what the topic of the magazine is, each month it will always relate to college students in some way or another, for example on this issue of  'COLLEGE' magazine,  it talks about smoking and pregnancy, both of which are two topics that currently come up when talking about teenage students because more and more young adults ranging from 16-18 can relate to these subjects.
The front cover features a young girl which will in turn mainly target a male audience however because the front cover changes every time there is a new issue, the next front cover model may perhaps be a young male model which will attract mainly the female audience.

Audience:

The target audience for this magazine is primarily aimed at college students who will curently be taking A- Levels throughout the world. We know this because of the masthead that says 'COLLEGE' and we anticipate college with A-Levels, also the fact that there is young college girl student who features as the main image on the front cover of the magazine further backs up the target audience for this magazine.
Both of these are key things in suggesting who the magazine is aimed at, however there are other things that tell us the audience such as the coverline that states 'Nastia Liukin on SMU's campus' and campus is either releted to a university or even an American college.
Although the magazine front cover image will change monthly, the fact that there is a young, attractive model on the front page that people may recognise as soon as they see, will draw people in to pick up a copy of the magazine and to read it. Moreover if there was a middle aged woman on the front it wouldnt really attract people of a young age to the magazine and it would'nt suite the desired target audience.

Representation

The image used on this magazine has been carefully thought out so that it gives a good representation of the magazine and its purpose, for example most people would look at a college magazine and instantly put it down if they saw an  image that didnt make the magazine look appealing or interesting.
Moreover, because the main image on this front cover is a young girl smiling, it makes the reader wonder why it is that she is smiling and also makes the college magazine look less boring, and instantly more appealing to the student or who ever it is looking at it.
Furthermore the photo was captured in a field on a summers day which gives the essence of freedom  and suggests that she is relaxed with lots of time free outside of college to do as she pleases with her friends and family, also the fact that the model is smiling and is wearing a T-shirt saying 'I love SMU' suggests that she is happy with her college and enjoying college life.

Mood Board

Mock Up Of Lay Out For Contents And Front Cover

Examples Of Existing College Magazines

This magazine is called 'COLLEGE' and by this name we can tell that the target audience for this magazine is college students and people sitting A-Levels.
The magazine has very eye catching sub-titles and a masthead that is significant bacause of its bright green, bold font that stands out to readers.
Other conventions included on the magazine include; Feature stories, Barcode, Dateline, Colours, Smaller Features, Sell line and also images, all of which are very prominant and stand out to the audience.
All of these conventions are very important to magazines because this is what sells them.
I will make sure that when it comes to designing, planning, making that I include them all in my magazine front cover because they are the things that make a magazine what it is .

This magazine is also called 'COLLGE' but is made by a different company.
It has pretty much all of the same conventions as the other magazine above such as, Feature stories, a Barcode,  a Dateline, Colours, Smaller Features, Sell line and images.
However, this magazine doesnt look as messy as the one above because its more neatly organised and colour themed which is a good thing because passing readers can take more in and read things better if its set out like this.
When creating my magazine i will make sure that it is set out like this magazine because it has everything a magazine should have without it looking over crowded and messy, however i would obviously change the colour, name and date on it depending on the choices that i make.

Types of camera framing

1. Extreme long shot - can be taken from as much as a quarter of a mile away, and is generally used as a scene-setting, establishing shot. It normally shows an exterior, for example the outside of a building, or a landscape.

2. Long Shot - This category includes the FULL SHOT showing the entire human body, with the head near the top of the frame and the feet near the bottom. While the focus is on characters, plenty of background detail still emerges.

3. Medium Shot - Contains a figure from the knees/waist up and is one of the common shots used on magazines.

4. Close-Up - shows very little background, and concentrates on either a face, or a specific detail of mise en scène. Everything else is just a blur in the background. This shot magnifies the object and shows the importance of things, be it words written on paper, or the expression on someone's face.

5. Extreme Close-Up - is an extreme version of the close up,  magnifying beyond what the human eye would see. An extreme close-up of a face, would show only the mouth or eyes, with no background detail.
